Gastroenteritis- due to Human Rota Virus(HRV)

Abstract
Epidemic viral gastroenteritis is a significant world-wide problem. Since Bishop had described the presence of viral particles in 1973, these viruses have been called Rotavirus and have been firmly established as major cause of gastroenteritis in children under the age of two years, especially during the winter season.
We wished to investigate the prevalence of HRV infection. So, in order to investigate the nature of HRV infection, we reviewed all patients hospitalized from September, 1982, to December, 1983. Among total 184 patients whose main symptom was diarrhea, 66 patients were positive with Enzygnost test(ELISA) for Rotavirus. Clinical and laboratory characteristics of HRV-positive cases were as follows;
1) HRV-positive rate with ELISA was 35.9%. The big prevalence was in October and November.
2) Mean age of HRV-positive cases was 11.6¡¾5.0 months.
3) Proportion between boys (39) and girls (27) was 1.4: 1.
4) Watery diarrhea developed in all cases and average duration of diarrhea was 5. 9¡¾2. 1 days.
5) Abrupt onset of vomiting was noted in 57 cases(86.4%) to precede watery diarrhea and average duration of vomiting was 2.7¡¾1.5 days.
6) Low grade fever was noted in 52 cases (81.8%) and average duration of fever was 3.1 ¡¾1.8 days.
7) Fifty-seven cases (86.4%) have had URI symptoms.
8) Mild to moderate isotonic dehydration was seen in 89.4%.
9) Fecal leukocytosis was seen in 10.6% and occult blood of strong positive was seen in only 2 cases.
10) Mean duration of hospitalization was 5.1¡¾1.7 days and all cases recovered without sequelae by oral or N fluid therapy.
